Family law & custody

This blog provides resources, analysis, case studies, case law and personal experience on how Bipolar is an issue in family law proceedings and custody battles. The aim is to inform you and thereby arm you with means by which you can protect your position as a carer for your children despite the fact that you have Bipolar.

I personally have been involved in a legal battle for the care of my children due to my own diagnosis of Bipolar. The Judge ordered that there should be a “Shared Residency Order” in place under section 8 of the Children’s Act 1989, but that my ex husband should have the majority of the care due mainly to the fact that I have Bipolar. This, in my view, is a highly questionable judgement and has spurred me on to conduct as much research as possible into the whole issue of parenting with a mental illness.

As a lawyer, I’m able to identify the relevant pieces of legislation to post for your information on this site. I also post relevant articles, pieces of research, case law, personal experience and any other piece of information which I consider may be of use to parents who are trying to find their way through the family law process.
